So after weeks of saying we were going to go, a group of us finally made it Old Melbourne Gaol for the ‘Crime and Justice experience’. From what we’d heard you could have a wander around the grounds and then get ‘arrested’ to see what it was like.
After we arrived we went inside and the re-enactment had begun. I knew there was some kind of performance but I didn’t know what it was exactly. It turned out to be a woman dressed up in old fashioned attire acting out the part of Ned Kelly’s wife. Now Ned Kelly is probably the most well-known prisoner to be held at Old Melbourne Gaol. She spoke about how they met and what he was like, before moving on to how he got into his life of crime, and eventually, his prison sentence. She also spoke of how she was unjustly arrested and jailed in the women’s wing, and eventually Ned Kelly’s death. It was interesting, if not a bit tedious at times.

Once she had finished, we took some photos with her and some replica Ned Kelly amour.

Then we headed upstairs to have a look at some of the cells. As the women’s wing was demolished years ago, you can only see the men’s wing but I would guess it would be almost the same.

The cells were shockingly small. I mean when you think about how comfy modern prisons are and all of the privileges inmates have, an older prison like this one seems very shocking and almost inhumane. When you think about it in context though, it is a punishment, and perhaps if modern prisons weren’t so cushy, then maybe it would act as more of a deterrent!

Upstairs there were various displays. Some of the cells told you who used to inhabit it and what their crimes were. There was one display that caught my eye; it was about baby farming. One woman in particular was mentioned; her name was Elizabeth Downey.

I was also quite shocked when I read “A government enquiry in the 1880s reviewing the deaths of 500 small children found that more than half had appeared to have been murdered.” Even in such devastating times like those, that still seems like a ridiculous amount. It didn’t go into the details of how the children were killed but you can imagine they suffered by drowning or bludgeoning.
Another room I found really interesting was one with real hangman memorabilia. There was a model prisoner that was dressed up and ready to be hung. He was shackled and had a noose around his neck. There was also a hangman’s box next to it. In the box were several items that were used when completing a prisoner’s death sentence. There was also a sign saying that the box and all of its contents were the real equipment used by the Old Melbourne Gaol hangmen. I thought that was pretty cool, if not slightly morbid.

After we’d all finished nosing around, we met back up to take some ‘Banged Up’ snap shots!

When we felt as if we’d seen all there was to see, we headed outside and found a nice spot to hang out while we waited for the arrest experience to start.

We weren’t there very long before we thought we should go and queue. It was lucky we got there when we did too, as the line quickly extended down the street. The arrest took place next door at the sheriff’s department. Once inside we were lead through a gate and made to line up in a corridor. Men were told to stand on one side, and women on the other.

We were ordered by a guard to stand in a straight line before being asked several questions. We were asked if we had any contraband and told to place everything including bags, sunglasses, phones etc. at our feet or they would be confiscated. She made her way, with the assistance of a colleague, up the lines to ensure everyone had complied. They also ordered us to put our tongues on the roves of our mouths so they could check we weren’t hiding anything under it. She then handed out a couple of scenario sheets to a couple of the arrestees. They were asked what their names were and what their offences were. She asked them a series of questions relating to their offences whilst making notes. The complete arrest procedure was explained before we were placed in cells. There were approximately 15 people to a cell, and men and women remained separated.

The lights were turned out and we were left to sit in there for 5-10minutes. It was quite funny as people started busting jokes and getting up the torches on their phones. After she thought we’d had enough time to think about our actions, the guard let us out of our cells. We were then allowed to wander around the corridor and look at the different cell types. There were the regular cells, the drunk tanks that were built like wet rooms (for obvious reasons) and then the padded rooms for people that were deemed to be dangerous to themselves or others. The padded room was pretty cool and had special doors that allow you to open half of it to prevent the inmate inside to run at you etc.

We were then escorted around the rest of the sheriffs department and shown the outside exercise yards. There was lots of graffiti that had been scratched in the walls for various reasons. The women also had a tv outside that they could watch but couldn’t control. The nurses and guards were the only ones that could change the channel as it was built into the wall and caged. There was also a facility for children to be looked after by the staff while their mothers were sobering up or waiting to be collected my other family members.
When we’d been told about the different areas and average prisoner behaviour, we began to make our way out. After we passed through that door, there were information boards on the walls going through the years showing the prison’s construction, famous inmates etc. It was pretty interesting, and it was cool to see that one of the guys from Underbelly Razor used to be there.
Lastly we went into the final room where they had the wall and signs set up for taking mug shots. Of course we took several :p

All in all, it was a really nice day. We got to see some of Melbourne’s history and hear some cool stories along the way.
Until next time…

My 20th Birthday

Okay so my birthday was coming up and I decided that instead of organising an ever predictable piss up, which isn’t really my thing anyway, that I’d do something a bit different and go paintballing. So I went through all the motions of finding the best prices in the area and managed to get a pretty good deal. The next step was to see who was interested and everyone seemed pretty game. So then I had to get deposits off everyone and it got dragged out and dragged out until about the day before when I decided to cancel it.
Naturally I was kind of annoyed and upset that everyone had pretty much bailed on my birthday plans. So the night before me and my housemate Julie decided we were going to go to St.Kilda. Now I’d not been to St.Kilda yet and I’d heard it was nice, so I was looking forward to it.
So the next day (my birthday), we woke up and headed to St.Kilda. We had to change trams part of the way and I spotted an ‘Op Shop’. [For those who aren’t fluent in Australian, an Op Shop is a Charity Shop.] So I pointed it out to Ju and we headed in to have a browse. Nothing really caught my eye but Ju ended up buying a cute sun hat :)
So we proceeded on our journey and eventually made it to St.Kilda. It was a really sunny day, which made a change considering my birthday is in August!
We had a wander around the shops and I ended up spotting a bird cage. Now it probably sounds quite mad but for some reason, I fell in love with it. So, I decided, that would be by birthday present to myself! There was just something about it I really liked. It was also on sale, which is always a plus! Luckily the cashier was lovely and allowed me to leave it behind the counter until later, so I didn’t have to carry it around all day.
After we’d had enough of shopping, we started heading towards the beach. Then all of a sudden Ju sees some balloons on a sign outside a shop and says she wants one. So, like any good friend would, I broke one off for her. Then in true Ju fashion, she made me tie it to her wrist…..She kept it with her ALL day!
Ju had arranged to meet Marleen at the pier, so we had to walk to the opposite end of the beach.  When we made it there, we met Marleen and then found a nice spot on the beach to sit down.

I managed to get Ju to dip her feet in the sea but that was about it. She was more interested in building an ice cream out of sand!

She was quite annoyed when I said the top looked like a pair of boobs but in the end we demolished everything around it so she could see for herself.

After hanging out on the beach for a while, we headed back into the town. We stopped in a nice little café and had some refreshments. When we were done there we headed into this amusement park nearby to have a look around. The rides ended up looking crappier than expected and being extremely overpriced. So we took some photos in the crazy mirrors and left.

I’d posted at the last minute on facebook that if people wanted to come over to our house that we could hang out and have a few drinks. So as it started to get dark, we thought we’d better head home to make sure we got there before people started arriving. On the way Ju got bored and decided to take photos of me on the tram.

I arrived home to a bottle of Bulmer’s Cider with a bow on it and a door decorated with birthday signs. I have very cute housemates.

Shortly after, some of the guys arrived, and being the complete sweethearts they are, they bought me a cake. We all went up to the games room, played some pool and beer pong and had a few drinks. Me and Ju ordered pizza and once we’d devoured that, we decided to cut the cake. It was really sickly but good.

So my day didn’t go to plan but it all worked out in the end :)

The Immigration Museum/Chinatown

Me, Lisa, Amanda and Taylor decided we were going to check out the Immigration Museum in the city. I wasn't really sure what to expect or if i would enjoy it but i thought it was worth a look!

The first floor has various artefacts to do with the colonisation of Australia. There were clothes, shoes, propaganda; all sorts. It was interesting but it didn't take us very long to make our way around it.

After we'd had enough fun in the loos, we made our way upstairs. Now the best part of the museum was on this floor, and it was a replica of a ship. It was quite big and filled the entire room it was in. We spent quite a lot of time wandering around it and trying various things out.

Taylor teaching me how to play Chinese Checkers.
Me trying out a ship replica bed....It was made of sand bags and was SO ridiculously uncomfortable!
Me trying on a CHILDREN'S life vest!

After i was done trying things out/on and everyone was done laughing at me trying to get out of that life vest, we decided to go to Chinatown for dinner. Lisa and Taylor said they went to a nice resturant there a while back and so we wandered around trying to find it. Of course it was at the opposite end of C-Town but it proved to be a good decision in the end!

We all ordered our own dishes but ended up trying bits of everything. Their Beef in Black Bean Sauce didn't taste quite right but their Spring Rolls were pretty delicious! And Taylor being the absolute sweetheart she is; payed for my meal as a birthday present!

Me eating a spring roll....yummy!
Walrus!.....Man, i am too fucking cool.

Its blurry because Amanda was having a dispute with her camera haha!

We then had a wander around C-Town and i found a really cool little asian bakery. I decided to buy myself an early-birthday treat and got a small chocolate mud cake. It was possibly the best cake i have ever had, and their coconut tarts were pretty amazing too!

Day Trip to Phillip Island!

A bunch of us joined this thing called the 'Culture Card' not long after we got here. Which is basically this website that has various events organised and gives discounted or free tickets to students that are members. So they posted this day trip to Phillip Island, and at first it seemed kind of expensive but we soon realised its value for money when we found out that we would have to spend the night otherwise as the last train was really early. In the end, me, Lisa, Veronica, Taylor and Laura Tafuri ended up going.

We started the day off by heading to the city to meet our tour bus/guide. Me and Tay stopped in a 7/11 and got some kick as deals on drinks and doughnuts...so already the day looked full of promise!

After loading up on the bus, we headed to Phillip Island.

This was a nightmare to photograph and took several attempts but i go there in the end!
Me doing what i normally do!

It took a good couple hours but then we arrived at our first stop; Phillip Island Chocolate Factory! Now this factory does run tours but we didn't have time to go on one unfortunately as we had plenty of other stops to make. We did however have time to have a nose around the shop and try some free samples :D

Coolest display ever!
This train just ran back and fourth around this small track and disappeared into the wall. It became quite a challege to get a photo of it as it happened to go past!

After some of us made a few purchses...we piled back onto the mini bus to head to our next location.

After driving for a little while we pulled up in this car park. We could see that we were at a beach, and were all pretty excited to head down onto it. So me and Taylor jumped out and literally ran down onto the sand! It was really beautiful and a perfect day for the beach. Sadly we didn't get to spend much time there but it was really nice to see and get our feet...and legs wet!

My first step on an Australian beach.

It felt pretty cold at first!
And of course Taylor couldn't leave without having a photo taken with a true Australian surfer!
This is Bernie.

We then piled back onto the bus once again to head to 'The Nobbies'. Now The Nobbies; whilst having quite a dirty sounding name, is actually a set of sea stacks. The area was unbelievably picturesk and me and Taylor managed to walk the entire path around it before having to leave. We had some laughs along the way too!

Our friend 'Stumpy' the Seagull...Taylor tried to take a photo with him but he was having none of it and flew away!
We both made the same face, at the same time, completely by accident. How cool are we!?

After taking in the incredible scenery that was 'The Nobbies' and TRYING to spot a penguin or a seal, we headed back to the mini bus. The sun was just starting to set, and it was really pretty. On the way to 'The Penguin Parade' we spotted some wild wallabies!

After snapping a few photos of those beauties we arrived at 'The Penguin Parade'

After making our way inside, me and Taylor managed to lose everyone as per normal. SO, we made our own way outside to find a good spot. As we were walking around a wallaby jumped out of some bushes right next to us but it was too quick to take a photo unfortunaltely. We then came up to some bleechers which looked pretty packed. Noticing there was another set of bleechers a bit further down, we decided to try our luck there instead. We ended up making the right decision as we managed to get on the floor right at the front, and had the BEST seats of anyone on either set of bleechers as the penguins had to walk right past us to get to the rocks nearby. They were so ridiculously cute and walked in small groups up the beach and hopped onto the rocks. I did not take any photos though, as photography is disruptive to the penguins and therefore forbidden.

Once the penguins had stopped coming up the beach, we started wandering back to the gift shop area. Along the way we saw several penguins in or next to nests. It was really nice to see them in their natural environment expressing natural behaviours, especially ones related to the breeding season! We even saw a pair copulating...dirty buggers! :P

When we thought we'd seen enough, and in some cases more than enough, we headed back to the mini bus for the final stretch of our journey. The last stop was 'Moonlit Sanctuary.' Now all i knew about the sanctuary was that we were going to be walking around looking at the nocturnal animals on display, so it was all kind of a mystery. So we arrive, and the guy introduces himself and goes and gets out a Jungle Python for us to have a hold of. It was really pretty.

We then proceeded outside to this paddock area. On the other side of the fence we could just about make out some Kangaroos and Wallabies that were hopping around.

I tried to snap a few photos of them in the dark and was pleasantly surprised when i saw this one!

Wallaby with a joey in her pouch ^_^

We were then let in with them so we could feed them! It was quite unexpected but it was a really cool experience. They were so lovely and a couple of them let us smoove them. You could see they all had their own characters too. As there were a couple that were really shy and held back, whereas some mobbed you as soon as they saw you had food. Some of them were quite funny too, as they would put their front legs on your hand and pull the food towards them, and then another one would do the same thing on the other side; so they'd just be pulling you back and fourth so they could get a mouthful!

We then proceeded to walk around the sanctuary. Heres some of the critters we saw:

Tawny Frog Mouth
Tasmanian Devil...This guy would not keep still. He just kept running around like a wild thing! So these were the best i could do really!
Tasmanian Devil again.

We also saw a Koala, Dingoes, Sugar Gliders, Potoroo and much more. I didn't get photos of them though as it was too dark and/or the flash was disruptive.

So that about concludes our day trip! It was a fantastic day and we were all knackered by the time we got home. Til next time...
